The Best Media Relations Tips You'll Read This Year!

The first blog of the year and I'm coming to you with one hot off the press!

It's no surprise that media relations have changed from just a year ago. I mean… We have been in a pandemic for almost a year now and it doesn't really look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. The media landscape has changed dramatically but what that means for you is that as a small business owner, the access that was once so hard to get is now right at your fingertips! And yet there are still some things that you should still take heed to.

Get On Clubhouse: I have personally connected with so many journalists and bloggers just from being in the same room or on stage with them. Use this time to slide in the DM, mention Clubhouse, and ask if they are accepting pitches and what is the best way to contact them.

Do Your Research: So many companies have changed in the past year. The person who may have once written for a certain beat may have been moved to a different beat or have been let go. Make sure that you update any contacts that you previously had.

COVID trumps all: Medical professionals now is your time to SHINE. But where does that leave everyone else? Keep in mind that any news pertaining to and/or around the pandemic and COVID 19 will be put before your story. That's just how the media works.

Give the media some grace: In the past year, have you lost someone you were close to? Have you been sick and wasn't sure whether it was COVID or your allergies? Wasn't sure if you were going to make your rent this year? Had to let people go from your team? Guess what!? The same people that you’re reaching out to in their inbox have been going through the same thing. We are all human and we all go through the same thing. Keep that in mind before you send that 3rd follow-up email.

I hope these tips helped you! If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments.
